Cannes Film Festival 16-27 May 2012

After the Oscars, Cannes is set to be the most glamorous red carpet event. The Oscars may miss out on world cinema and art house gems, but Cannes is set to deliver. Last year We Need To Talk About Kevin, Melancholia, and Tree Of Life gave us the sinister, sad, and beautiful.

So what can we look forward to this year?

Tonight opens with Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, which he collaborated on the script with Roman Coppola. After viewing stills and trailers, it appears to be full of his stylized aesthetics characterized by primary colors. Meanwhile the film introduces us to 13 year old new-comer Kara Hayard who is being dubbed “the next big thing to watch” playing alongside Tilda Swinton.

Other films set to garner attention include David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis selected to compete for the Palme d'Or along with On The Road based on Jack Kerouac’s semi-autobiographical book. Seeing that the book influenced a generation of beatniks, perhaps this could influence a beatnik inspired runway for ss2013.

Another era to look at is the American Prohibition, where Lawless takes place. One theme that appears to be trending is male identity, with many films confronting morals from the man’s point of view, similar in spirit to FX’s Justified. Leading new actors at Cannes include LaBeouf, Efron and Pattinson.

This year’s jury is headed by Italian director Nanni Moretti , with fellow jurists including Jean Paul Gaultier, Diane Kruger, Ewan McGregor, and Alexander Payne. Some of the most successful films to come out of Cannes in recent years have been out completion. From Un Certain Regard, we have Sylvie Verheyde’ s Confession of a Child of the Century starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Pete Doherty and Lily Cole to look forward to along with Brandon Cronenberg’s (yes, David’s son) Antiviral. The festival continues until the 27th May.
